In addition to the above mentioned Special Surveys, which become more arduous as the vessel ages, VLCC’s need to carry out a Condition Assessment Program survey (CAP) when the vessel reaches 15 years of age (3rd Special Survey) if Owners wish to charter their vessels to the worlds oil majors. The CAP is more extensive than the 3rd Special Survey itself. As you can see there is a great deal of work involved. The best way to avoid excessive over spends is careful planning and commencing these surveys well in advance of the due dates. Other upgrades can be planned and carried out at the same time, keeping your vessel attractive to would be charterers.
