History of the 'Carmania' Name

The company takes its name from the second Cunard cruise ship to bear the name Carmania. The ship was rechristened the Carmania in 1962 when she joined the cruise service. It was during this retrofit that her colour changed from the liner service black and white scheme to the green of the cruise service. When she was built in 1954 she was named the Saxonia.

Cunard took the name Carmania from the region of Carmania in the Achaemenid and later Sassanid Empires, the borders of which varied but which may have included at some point the area that is now Dubai within the UAE.
